Some of my favourite books to recommend

Mindset

  • Living The Sutras Book Cover

    Living The Sutras

    Kelly DeNardo & Amy Pearce-Hayden

This book takes a modern and digestible approach to the moral and ethical guidance in the yoga sutras.  It is common while training to be an instructor to study the sutras, but yoga is truly for everyone to live, whether you ever manipulate your body into a shape.

  • 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do Book Cover

13 Things Mentally strong people don't do

    Amy Morin

I remember where I was when I was reading this book.  I had taken on a 100 day challenge with a group of women to move our bodies, meditate, get outside and read personal development everyday.  I spent 20 to 30 minutes reading non-fiction everyday and I loved how everything in the book could be applied and remembered once forgotten.  A great read whether you are new to personal growth or it's been a daily habit for a while.

  • Think Again Book Cover

    Think Again

    Adam Grant

This book is important.  Critical thinking. Discernment. Getting out of your own head (and ass).  I love all of Adam’s books, but I highly recommend this one and also Hidden Potential.  So much so that I use their books as resources in some of the group coaching masterminds I have taught.

  • Worthy Book Cover

    Worthy

    Jamie Kern Lima

It's written for women, but it's not just for women. And yes, she mentions her relationship to Oprah a few times, but honestly, wouldn’t you?  If you are looking to read something that will remind you of your inherent value, this is it.  If you are hopeful to remind someone you love, gift them this book.

  • The Mountain Is You Book Cover

    The Mountain Is You

    Brianna Wiest

Imposter syndrome? Low-confidence? Questioning your worth and your purpose? Need to get out of a negative thought cycle?  This is the book for you.  I also suggest The Pivot Year for daily readings to shift your life towards presence and joy.

  • Atlas Of The Heart Book Cover

    Atlas of the Heart

    Brene Brown

When asked, people can usually only list around 6 emotions, most can’t tell you the difference between guilt and shame (Brene’s wheelhouse) or the difference between jealousy and envy.   This book is beautiful to have in your home, both inside and outside.  It is designed to teach the range of human emotions so that we can identify how we really feel.  I am hopeful she makes a kids version but otherwise I will use this one to help myself and kid identify how we are really feeling, what we can control and what we can’t.

Parenting

  • Good Inside Book Cover

    Good Inside

    Dr. Becky Kennedy

Whether you are a new parent, been at it for a while or maybe you want to take a stab at reparenting yourself.  This book on the duality of humans with a focus on separating behavior and emotion from WHO you and your child really are.

  • Raising Good Humans Book Cover

    Raising Good Humans

    Hunter Clarke-Fields

If anyone asks me about parenting I will tell them to learn how to regulate yourself first.  This is a beautiful book containing meditations and journaling prompts allowing you to work through your stuff before it gets in the way of joy with your kiddo.

Money

  • Financial Feminist Book Cover

    Financial Feminist

    Tori Dunlop

I wish I had this book when I was a teenager or in my 20s, hell I wish I had it in my 30s.  I didn’t know a lot of the things in this book up until I was 40.  Not only does she give financial advice that makes sense in the 2020s, she also provides some exercises for working through your relationship with money.  She points out the difference in advice that women receive in regards to finance compared to men, and that it seems to be up to us to sacrifice and cut back and to make a week’s worth of meals for $10.  It never has anything about us investing, what accounts we should have and how to have conversations with partners about money.  It was eye opening and as I said, I wish I could have started earlier but I am glad I have it now.

Biography

  • Taste Book Cover

    Taste

    Stanley Tucci

I listened to this because Mr. Tucci narrates it himself.  He is an amazing storyteller and shares incredible recipes and life stories through the lens of food.  I even enjoyed cooking dinner while I was listening to this one.

Fiction

  • The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley Book Cover

The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley

    Courtney Walsh

She’s out there to prove that there is no such thing as choosing happiness. It's her job, a university researcher, she has chosen this topic based on reading an article of actionable steps to make yourself happier. She likes things as they are. (might be obvious why I like this one)

  • Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine Book Cover

    Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

    Gail Honeyman

She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she is thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life.  No one told her life could be better than fine. This book explores a very hesitant Eleanor towards change.

  • One Italian Summer Book Cover

    One Italian Summer

    Rebecca Serle

A magical journey of grief.  If you haven’t read anything by Rebecca Serle, let's just say, I had trouble picking which one I wanted to feature here on the website. The location won. Give her books a try, The dinner List was the first of hers I read.

  • Book Lovers Book Cover

    Book Lovers

    Emily Henry

I am a big fan of Emily Henry and her rom-coms.  I firmly believe that books should be enjoyed and/or you should learn from them.  I learn a lot about human nature through books, it's my choice of content consumption for entertainment.  If Emily Henry is the writer, I will pick it up to read.

  • Begin Again Book Cover

    Begin Again

    Helly Acton

Living firmly in her comfort zone, knowing she is stuck, but not knowing what it is that got her there.  A constant series of what-ifs replay in her head and then she gets a chance to explore them.
